OUAGADOUGOU, BURKINA FASO — Malian President Assimi Goïta arrived in Ouagadougou on Thursday for a high-level friendship and working visit, underscoring a commitment to regional solidarity. During the visit, he held critical one-on-one talks with Burkina Faso’s leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, according to an official statement from the Burkina Faso presidency.
The bilateral discussions were heavily focused on advancing the objectives of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). Key agenda items included:
Regional Security & Development: Coordinating joint counterterrorism efforts and military strategies within the AES framework, alongside shared socio-economic development goals.
Continental Vision: Enhancing broader African integration and forging unified diplomatic stances.
Geopolitics: Navigating and responding to current international geopolitical developments.
The stop in Ouagadougou capped off a highly coordinated day of regional diplomacy. Earlier on Thursday, Goïta visited Niamey, Niger, to meet with his counterpart before proceeding to Burkina Faso. Following the conclusion of his talks with Traoré, the Malian presidency confirmed that Goïta returned to Bamako that same evening, wrapping up a rapid diplomatic mission aimed at fortifying the operational cohesion of the Sahelian alliance.
