ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — Slovakia has taken a significant step towards strengthening its diplomatic engagement with Africa, announcing the restoration of its diplomatic presence in Ethiopia while seeking closer cooperation with the African Union (AU). The development signals renewed European interest in expanding political dialogue, economic partnerships and multilateral cooperation across the African continent.
The announcement followed a diplomatic meeting in Addis Ababa between African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Rastislav Križan, Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Ethiopia and the African Union, who formally presented his credentials to the Commission Chairperson.
The engagement represents an important development in Slovakia’s diplomatic relations with African institutions and reflects growing recognition of Africa’s strategic importance in international affairs.
Slovakia Strengthens Its Diplomatic Presence in Africa
During the meeting, Ambassador Križan informed the African Union leadership of Slovakia’s decision to restore its diplomatic representation in Ethiopia, a country that occupies a central position in African diplomacy as the headquarters of the African Union.
The renewed diplomatic presence is expected to provide Slovakia with greater opportunities to engage directly with African governments, regional institutions and international organisations operating in Addis Ababa.
Slovakia’s diplomatic initiative also reflects a broader commitment to multilateralism, international dialogue and cooperation on matters of shared political and economic interest.
For African countries, the development presents additional opportunities to strengthen diplomatic relationships with European partners while advancing mutually beneficial cooperation in investment, trade, education, technology and sustainable development.
African Union Welcomes Renewed European Engagement
Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf welcomed the Slovak ambassador and acknowledged the longstanding relationship between the African Union and the European Union.
He emphasised the importance of international partnerships in supporting Africa’s long-term development objectives, particularly those outlined in Agenda 2063, the African Union’s strategic framework for achieving inclusive economic growth, continental integration and sustainable prosperity.
The Chairperson also welcomed Slovakia’s renewed diplomatic presence in Ethiopia, highlighting the value of stronger cooperation between African countries and European Union member states.
The diplomatic engagement comes as African institutions continue to pursue international partnerships that support industrial development, infrastructure investment, technological advancement and greater participation in global economic decision-making.
Agenda 2063 at the Centre of Africa–Europe Cooperation
The African Union’s Agenda 2063 remains a central framework guiding the continent’s development ambitions and its engagement with international partners.
The strategy prioritises economic transformation, regional integration, infrastructure development, institutional strengthening and the expansion of opportunities for Africa’s growing population.
Slovakia’s renewed engagement offers another diplomatic channel through which African and European institutions can explore cooperation consistent with these priorities.
As a member of the European Union, Slovakia participates in a broader European partnership with Africa covering economic development, peace and security, climate resilience, education and international governance.
Its diplomatic presence in Addis Ababa could facilitate more regular consultations with African Union institutions and contribute to stronger bilateral relationships with individual African countries.
For countries such as Rwanda, which continue to prioritise technological innovation, investment, economic diversification and international cooperation, expanded diplomatic engagement between Africa and European partners may create additional opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships.
A New Chapter in Africa–Slovakia Relations
Slovakia’s decision to restore its diplomatic presence in Ethiopia underscores the growing importance of direct engagement with African institutions at a time when the continent is seeking greater influence in global governance and international economic cooperation.
The development also highlights Addis Ababa’s continuing role as a major diplomatic centre connecting African governments with international partners.
While the meeting primarily focused on diplomatic representation and multilateral cooperation, the renewed relationship provides a foundation for future discussions on trade, investment, institutional partnerships and shared development priorities.
For the African Union, Slovakia’s diplomatic return represents another opportunity to broaden international partnerships while advancing Africa’s vision of economic integration, sustainable development and stronger representation in global affairs.
As Africa continues to pursue the ambitions of Agenda 2063, constructive relationships with European partners are expected to remain an important component of the continent’s international engagement.
