WASHINGTON — The Embassy of Rwanda in the United States has launched the 2026 Umuganura celebrations, bringing together members of the Rwandan community, friends of Rwanda, diplomats and families to celebrate the country’s cultural heritage, national achievements and commitment to unity and self-reliance.
The gathering, held on Sunday, marked the beginning of Umuganura activities expected to continue within Rwandan communities across the United States. Representatives of Rwandans living in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia attended alongside Friends of Rwanda, Embassy personnel and their families.
Umuganura, Rwanda’s traditional celebration of harvest and collective achievement, has evolved into a national occasion that connects cultural heritage with reflection on development, shared responsibility and the country’s future. The 2026 celebration is being observed under the theme “Isoko y’Ubumwe n’Ishingiro ryo Kwigira,” which can be translated as “A Source of Unity and a Foundation for Self-Reliance.”
Rwanda’s Ambassador to the United States, Mathilde Mukantabana, highlighted the broader significance of the celebration, describing Umuganura as an opportunity for Rwandans to recognize the progress their country has made while reflecting on the responsibility individuals share in advancing national development.
The celebration also emphasized the role of Rwandans living abroad in maintaining connections with their cultural heritage and contributing to Rwanda’s development. Through professional expertise, investment, entrepreneurship, knowledge exchange and community engagement, members of the diaspora continue to participate in the country’s wider development efforts.
In a message marking the occasion, the Embassy extended Umuganura wishes to Rwandans worldwide, with particular recognition of communities living in the United States and elsewhere abroad. The Embassy acknowledged their contribution to Rwanda’s pursuit of greater self-reliance and sustained national progress.
“Let us celebrate what we have achieved while remembering that, wherever we may be, unity and cooperation remain the foundation of our country’s journey toward self-reliance,” the Embassy said in its Umuganura message.

The gathering also reflected the intergenerational character of Umuganura, with children and families participating in cultural activities alongside community members. Their involvement underscored efforts to preserve Rwandan traditions among younger generations growing up outside the country while strengthening their connection to Rwanda’s history, values and cultural identity.
As Umuganura celebrations continue across Rwandan communities in the United States, the occasion is expected to provide opportunities for families and community organizations to celebrate shared accomplishments, strengthen cultural ties and reflect on their contribution to Rwanda’s future.
