Rwanda’s Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva has held talks with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in New York, with discussions focusing on strengthening cooperation and advancing areas of mutual interest between Rwanda and the UN.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, bringing together world leaders and senior officials for discussions on global and regional issues.
According to a message shared on X, Prime Minister Nsengiyumva thanked Guterres for the strong cooperation that has characterized relations between Rwanda and the United Nations during his tenure as Secretary General.
The two leaders also discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation in areas of shared interest.
The UN said the talks also touched on the security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and ongoing efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region.
The eastern DRC has remained affected by armed conflict involving several armed groups, including the FDLR, which has been active in the region for decades.
Rwanda, meanwhile, remains one of the major contributors of troops and personnel to UN peacekeeping missions around the world. Rwandan peacekeepers are currently deployed in missions in countries including South Sudan and the Central African Republic.
During his engagements in New York, Prime Minister Nsengiyumva also met with Kuwait’s Crown Prince, Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah.
Their discussions focused on ways to further strengthen the existing friendly relations between Rwanda and Kuwait and expand bilateral cooperation.
The meetings come as Rwanda continues to engage international partners on regional security, peacebuilding and development, while also maintaining its participation in UN peacekeeping operations.
