LOS ANGELES — Just days before the highly anticipated kickoff of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a massive diplomatic and sporting dispute has erupted. Iran has fiercely accused the United States of denying visas to “integral” backroom staff members of its national football team, casting a shadow of geopolitical tension over the tournament.
The controversy comes mere hours after Washington confirmed that Iranian players had officially been granted permission to travel to the U.S. for their matches.
According to U.S. officials, visas were successfully issued on Friday to all players and “necessary support staff,” giving them clearance just 10 days ahead of Iran’s opening fixture in Los Angeles on June 15. However, the U.S. firmly stated that it would not allow Iran to “abuse this system to sneak terrorists into the United States under false pretences.”
The decision quickly drew the ire of Iranian officials. Iran’s embassy in Turkey released a scathing statement condemning the U.S. for “politically biased interference in sport,” claiming that visas were unjustly denied to a “large portion of the managerial and executive staff,” as well as crucial technical advisers.
Iranian state-linked media reported that 15 administration officials were blocked from entering the United States. The denied list reportedly includes the head of the Iranian football federation, his deputy, and a media director.
Extreme Matchday Logistics
The visa restrictions have forced the Iranian squad into an unprecedented and grueling logistical nightmare. Under the strict conditions of their approved visas, the team will not be permitted to stay on American soil. Instead, the squad must enter and leave the United States on the exact same day as their matches, according to Iran’s ambassador to Mexico.
The team, which relocated its training base from Tucson, Arizona, to Mexico late last month, departed from Turkey on Saturday. Following a grueling 20-hour flight, they are expected to land in Mexico early Sunday morning, where they will remain based for the duration of the tournament.
An official Iranian statement blasted the U.S. announcement as a “whitewash,” declaring: “You have now escalated the deliberate and discriminatory treatment against Iran’s national football team to its highest level.”
In response to the restrictions, Iranian embassy officials have formally called upon FIFA, world football’s governing body, to intervene in the escalating dispute.
Security and High-Stakes Diplomacy
The 2026 World Cup, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, begins this Thursday, June 11. Iran secured its spot in the tournament by topping its qualification group in March 2025—nearly a full year before the current armed conflict between the two nations broke out.
This marks a historic and fraught first for the FIFA World Cup: it is the first iteration of the global tournament where a host nation will receive a team from a country with which it is actively at war.
U.S. officials remain uncompromising on their security protocols. Earlier this week, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio assured lawmakers that the Iranian football delegation would not be permitted to include any individuals linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)—a powerful and heavily sanctioned branch of the Iranian armed forces. It is noted that several players within the Iranian squad have previously completed mandatory military service with the group.
While the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) declined to specify the exact day-to-day restrictions the Iranian players will face while on American soil, they emphasized a zero-tolerance policy on security risks.
In a statement, the DHS affirmed it is “steadfast in our commitment to the safety and security of the American people and attendees of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.” The agency added that it is “intricately involved in the whole of government approach securing the 11 host city sites across the nation, including Los Angeles.”
