CONSTANTA, Romania — On Friday, June 5, 2026, Ukraine officially acknowledged that the maritime drone which exploded in the Romanian port of Constanta on the Black Sea belonged to its fleet. According to Kyiv, the device was “disrupted” and forced off course by Russian jamming systems before it self-destructed.
While the explosion fortunately resulted in no casualties, it has heightened anxieties in the region. The incident comes barely a week after an aerial drone crashed into a residential building in Romania—a member of both the European Union and NATO—leaving two people injured. In light of the escalating regional risks, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed that the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine poses a direct threat to all EU nations.
Meanwhile, relentless Russian strikes continue to claim civilian lives on Ukrainian soil, with at least seven deaths reported over the past few hours.
Early this morning, a Russian drone strike targeted an agri-food processing plant near the capital, Kyiv. The regional governor confirmed that this tragic attack claimed the lives of four people, prompting a massive deployment of the State Emergency Service to the devastated site.
Further south, in the Kherson region, a Russian drone attack struck a gas station in the community of Chornobaivka. Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the regional military administration, announced that the strike left five people injured. The medical condition of several victims is critical: two men are in a “serious” state, suffering from explosive brain trauma and shrapnel wounds, while a third victim underwent a traumatic leg amputation. “Doctors are doing everything possible to save their lives,” Prokudin stressed, adding that three other injured individuals are in a “moderately serious” condition.
On the diplomatic front, the U.S. House of Representatives has adopted a resolution renewing its steadfast support for Ukraine in the face of Moscow’s offensive. In Russia, security remains on high alert: President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit St. Petersburg, a trip that is taking place under the constant threat of Ukrainian drone swarms.
