ZURICH — The traditional pre-match parallel lineups are officially a thing of the past. In a bold move to modernize the fan experience, FIFA has unveiled a radically redesigned, “unique, immersive” pre-match ceremony format that will be implemented for all matches at the 2026 World Cup.
In a departure from decades of football tradition where starting XIs stood shoulder-to-shoulder facing the main grandstand, the new format will see both teams—including all available substitutes—form expansive circles in their respective halves of the pitch.
As the national anthems ring out across the stadiums, the full matchday squads will gather around the center circle, backed by extra-large national flag banners dramatically unfurled across the pitch. With up to 52 players potentially on the field alongside the match officials and mascots, the visual spectacle is designed to engage fans from every angle.
World football’s governing body described the innovation as a “360-degree ceremony,” ensuring an inclusive and captivating experience for supporters regardless of where they are seated in the stadium.
The shift comes as FIFA actively searches for new ways to elevate player introductions without disrupting match schedules. During the 2025 Club World Cup, an experimental individual walk-on introduction for starting players proved unpopular, as the drawn-out formalities caused several games to kick off late. The new unified approach seeks to balance grandeur with efficiency.
Under the finalized 2026 World Cup protocol, every player selected in the matchday squad will enter the field through a dedicated arch, accompanied by mascots, before converging in the center for the anthems.
“As the FIFA World Cup grows, we continue to innovate the way the game is experienced,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino. “Having all players and referees face each other in the centre circle during the national anthems will create a moment of unity, pride, and emotion that truly belongs to the teams and to everyone.”
Infantino emphasized that the tournament is about the collective spirit of the sport. “The FIFA World Cup is about every player and every fan, and this new pre-match ceremony reflects that,” he added.
To further elevate the atmosphere as the stakes get higher, FIFA confirmed that later stages of the tournament will feature enhanced ceremonial elements, including the deployment of colored smoke and pyrotechnics, ensuring the 2026 World Cup kicks off with unprecedented spectacle.
