Uganda has officially nominated veteran diplomat Ambassador Olara Otunnu as its candidate for the position of United Nations Secretary-General, launching its campaign to secure international support for his candidacy. During a meeting at State House in Entebbe with ambassadors representing members of the United Nations Security Council, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni formally introduced Otunnu as Uganda’s nominee and encouraged the diplomats to communicate the country’s endorsement to their respective governments. The nomination comes as the United Nations prepares for the selection of a successor to Secretary-General António Guterres at the conclusion of his term.
In an official statement, President Museveni described Ambassador Otunnu as a distinguished international public servant with extensive experience in diplomacy and multilateral affairs. He noted that Otunnu’s years of service within the United Nations system, combined with his leadership record and commitment to international cooperation, position him to lead the organization during a period of complex global challenges. “Ambassador Otunnu has the experience, integrity, and diplomatic credentials to lead the United Nations,” President Museveni said, while emphasizing Uganda’s contributions to regional peace, security, and humanitarian efforts, including its long-standing policy of hosting refugees. The nomination reflects Uganda’s commitment to strengthening multilateral cooperation and supporting effective global leadership through the United Nations selection process.
