Kigali Mayor Joins Cell-Level Elections as Rwanda Votes for Closer Representation
Kigali, Rwanda — Kigali City Mayor Samuel Dusengiyumva on Friday joined residents at GS Busanza in Kanombe Sector to take part in Rwanda’s cell-level elections, as voters across the country turned out to choose representatives in decentralized governance structures.

The elections began with voters lining up behind the candidate of their choice, following the rules governing the exercise. The process was underway nationwide, with officials sharing live images of Rwandans casting their votes at the Akagari level.

The cell-level vote follows elections at the village (Umudugudu) level held on October 24. After the cell elections, sector-level elections are scheduled for November 7.

The broader goal of the exercise is to install representatives who are close to citizens and who can play a direct role in bringing community concerns and requests to the attention of local and national leadership.

Mayor Dusengiyumva’s participation in Kanombe underscored the city’s emphasis on grassroots participation and the role of local elections in strengthening accountable, citizen-centered governance.
