VIENTIANE, Laos β Rescue teams in Laos achieved a major breakthrough on Saturday after safely bringing four more villagers out of a flooded cave where they had been trapped for more than a week. Their rescue came one day after another survivor was successfully evacuated, while efforts remain underway to locate two individuals who are still unaccounted for.
Authorities and volunteer rescue organizations from Laos and neighboring Thailand announced the successful operation through social media updates, sharing images that showed the rescued men receiving medical assistance shortly after emerging from the cave. The survivors were transported on stretchers and provided oxygen and emergency care as a precaution.
According to local reports, a group of villagers entered the cave in search of mineral deposits believed to be valuable. Shortly after their entry, heavy rainfall triggered sudden flooding that rapidly filled sections of the cave system, blocking the exit and leaving several members of the group trapped underground.
One member of the group managed to escape before the flooding became severe and immediately notified local authorities, prompting an extensive rescue effort involving divers, emergency responders, and volunteer teams from both Laos and Thailand.
Rescuers indicated that improving conditions inside the cave played a key role in the successful evacuation. Water levels reportedly dropped enough to allow trapped individuals to move through sections of the cave with assistance from divers who had been delivering food, water, and other essential supplies during the ordeal.
The organization Rescue Volunteer for People stated that the rescued villagers were able to leave the cave safely once conditions became more favorable. Teams have pledged to continue search operations in hopes of locating the remaining two missing men.
Footage shared online by Thai rescuer Chakkit Taengtang captured emotional scenes as survivors emerged from the cave entrance covered in mud after days underground. Rescue personnel helped the exhausted men to safety, while fellow responders and family members expressed relief and emotion following the successful operation.
Medical teams are monitoring the rescued villagers to assess their health after spending ten days in difficult conditions. Officials have not yet released detailed information about their medical status, but early reports suggest they were conscious when brought out of the cave.
The rescue operation has drawn significant attention across the region, highlighting the dangers posed by sudden flooding in cave systems during the rainy season. Emergency responders continue to face challenging conditions as they search for the two missing villagers and work to determine whether anyone else may still be trapped within the cave network.
Authorities have urged caution for residents and visitors entering caves and remote natural areas during periods of heavy rainfall, noting that rapidly changing water levels can create life-threatening situations within minutes.
As the search continues, families and community members remain hopeful that the remaining missing men will also be found and brought to safety.
