Washington DC – The Dean of the African Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador of Rwanda to the United States, Ambassador Mathilde Mukantabana, joined fellow African ambassadors and representatives of the African Union in hosting a reception in Washington, D.C., to commemorate Africa Day, bringing together diplomats, government officials, business leaders, members of the African diaspora, and friends of Africa to celebrate the continent’s achievements and its growing partnership with the United States.

The event was held as African nations marked 63 years of sovereignty and unity since the founding of the Organization of African Unity, now the African Union, while the United States prepares to celebrate 250 years of independence. The gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on the historical journeys of both Africa and the United States and to reaffirm a shared commitment to peace, prosperity, and international cooperation.

She highlighted the tremendous progress achieved across the African continent over the past six decades and pointed to Africa’s youthful population, expanding economies, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit as key drivers of future global growth. Ambassador Mukantabana stressed that Africa is not only a continent of opportunity but also a vital partner in addressing global challenges and advancing sustainable development.

In her remarks, Ambassador Mukantabana underscored the significance of building partnerships rooted in mutual respect, shared interests, and common aspirations. She noted that as Africa celebrates 63 years of sovereignty and the United States approaches its 250th anniversary of independence, both sides have an opportunity to deepen cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, education, technology, healthcare, climate action, and security. She emphasized that stronger collaboration can create lasting benefits for citizens across both continents while contributing to global stability and prosperity.

Throughout the reception, speakers reflected on Africa’s remarkable transformation, highlighting achievements in economic development, regional integration, infrastructure expansion, and technological advancement. Participants also discussed the growing role of African nations in shaping international affairs and contributing to solutions for some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

The event further celebrated the strong people-to-people connections that continue to strengthen relations between Africa and the United States. Guests recognized the contributions of the African diaspora to American society and the importance of cultural, educational, and professional exchanges in fostering greater understanding and cooperation.

A central message echoed throughout the evening was that the relationship between African nations and the United States stands at a moment of exceptional importance and opportunity. Participants expressed optimism that continued engagement, strategic partnerships, and shared investment in future generations will help unlock new avenues for growth and development.

As the celebration concluded, Ambassador Mukantabana and fellow African diplomats reaffirmed their commitment to advancing collaboration between Africa and the United States. The reception served as both a celebration of Africa’s achievements and a forward-looking call to strengthen partnerships that promote peace, innovation, economic progress, and shared prosperity for generations to come.
