The Congolese Revolutionary Army (ARC), the military wing affiliated with the AFC/M23 movement, has graduated 9,318 newly trained commandos following the completion of an intensive military training program in Tchanzu, North Kivu Province. The graduation ceremony, held on July 20, 2026, marked the conclusion of several months of military instruction that AFC/M23 officials said was designed to strengthen the force’s operational readiness and organizational capacity.
Addressing the graduates during the ceremony, ARC Commander General Sultani Makenga called on the newly trained commandos to uphold discipline, protect Congolese civilians, and carry out their responsibilities with integrity. He urged them to remain committed to safeguarding the population while standing against discrimination, injustice, and all forms of abuse. Makenga emphasized that the force’s mission should be guided by the protection of citizens and respect for the communities they serve.
According to AFC/M23, the recruits successfully completed rigorous military training and are now prepared to undertake assignments within areas administered by the movement. The graduation ceremony included military formations and demonstrations intended to showcase the capabilities developed during the training program.
Speaking on behalf of AFC/M23, spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka described the graduation as a significant milestone in strengthening the movement’s operational capabilities. He stated, “After several months of intensive training, these new recruits have successfully completed their training and are ready to carry out the missions assigned to them.” Kanyuka added that the graduates are expected to contribute to improving protection mechanisms for communities living in territories under the movement’s administration.
In his address, General Makenga told the graduates that their responsibility extends beyond military duties, urging them to protect the Congolese people, reject discrimination and injustice, and conduct themselves with professionalism and discipline. He stressed that the credibility of the force would depend on its commitment to serving and protecting civilians.
The graduation takes place amid the continuing security challenges in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where armed conflict and diplomatic efforts to restore stability remain ongoing. AFC/M23 officials presented the completion of the training program as part of their broader effort to develop a disciplined force capable of carrying out its stated security responsibilities while protecting the civilian population in areas under its control.
