NAIROBI, Kenya — Rwanda’s national boxing team delivered a standout performance at the 2026 Africa Elite Boxing Championships in Nairobi, capturing four medals—a historic silver and three bronzes—marking one of the country’s strongest showings at the continental event.

The headline achievement came from Valentin Ntabanganyimana, who secured a silver medal in the men’s 55kg category. Valentin fought his way to the final, where he ultimately fell to Uganda’s Samuel Nsubuga by a unanimous 5-0 decision. Despite the loss in the gold-medal bout, his silver represents a milestone for Rwandan boxing, as it is the first time the nation has reached this level at the Africa Elite Championships.

Joining him on the podium were Niyonzima Pacifique, Iyanone Jean Claude, and Kenny, each of whom claimed bronze medals. Niyonzima Pacifique’s bronze came in the men’s 65kg division, where he was stopped in the semi-finals by Nigeria’s Ridwan Raheem on points. The bronze medals from Iyanone Jean Claude and Kenny further underscored Rwanda’s growing depth across multiple weight classes.

The four-medal haul places Rwanda among the notable performers at the inaugural World Boxing Africa Elite Championships, which were held at the Kasarani Indoor Arena from October 17 to 22. Host nation Kenya topped the overall standings, while Uganda also impressed with a strong medal count. For Rwanda, however, the focus is on a breakthrough campaign that signals the country’s rising competitiveness on the African boxing stage.

Valentin’s silver, in particular, is being celebrated as a historic first—a testament to the progress of Rwanda’s boxing program and a source of inspiration for the next generation of fighters. With three additional bronzes in the bag, the team returns home with both tangible success and momentum as it looks ahead to future continental and international competitions.
