The University of Rwanda has been recognized as one of only five higher education institutions across Africa selected for the inaugural Africa Higher Education for Transformation (AHET) Prize, a distinction that acknowledges universities making significant contributions to advancing higher education and expanding opportunities for young people across the continent. According to Rwanda’s Ministry of Education, the recognition includes a grant of USD 3 million, which will support the University of Rwanda in scaling innovative initiatives designed to strengthen education, improve graduate employability, and increase access to opportunities for African youth. The award highlights the institution’s role in promoting academic excellence, innovation, and sustainable development within Africa’s higher education sector.
In announcing the achievement, Rwanda’s Ministry of Education described the recognition as an important milestone for the country’s education system, noting that the University of Rwanda was selected for its efforts to transform higher education and contribute to Africa’s long-term development. The Ministry stated, “The University of Rwanda has been named among just five African institutions honoured by the Mastercard Foundation for advancing higher education transformation across the continent.” The Ministry further noted that the funding will help expand transformative programs that create greater educational and professional opportunities for young people throughout Africa.
The recognition also reflects a broader commitment to strengthening the connection between higher education, innovation, and employment. The Mastercard Foundation emphasized that the AHET Prize celebrates universities that are developing practical solutions to improve learning outcomes, foster innovation, and create stronger pathways from education to meaningful careers. Through this investment, the University of Rwanda is expected to further enhance research, academic partnerships, and student-centered programs that contribute to Africa’s social and economic progress while preparing graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to address future challenges.
