WEST DARFUR, Sudan —The Sudanese Armed Forces and allied formations have taken control of Bir-Kelekel, a strategic town located in the eastern part of Jebel Mun district in West Darfur state, following fierce clashes with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), state governor Bahr al-Din Adam Karama announced on Sunday.
The governor emphasized the strategic importance of the town, stating that control over it will allow government forces to continue offensive operations in West Darfur. He noted that fighting in the state continues as the army seeks to consolidate its gains.
Army officers posted videos on social media announcing control of the area. Sources say the RSF suffered significant losses in personnel and equipment during the battle, though exact casualty figures were not provided.
The capture of Bir-Kelekel marks the second major gain for the army in the region in recent days. On October 5, allied forces supporting the Sudanese army announced the capture of Bir-Saliba in West Darfur after clashes with the RSF.
The Sudanese army currently controls most of northern, eastern, and central Sudan while advancing to RSF strongholds in Darfur and parts of Kordofan. The latest territorial gain signals a continued push by government forces to reclaim territory in the western region, which has been a focal point of the ongoing conflict.
