KIGALI, Rwanda – In a landmark move for Africa’s digital economy, Rwanda has officially transitioned all domestic interoperable retail payment transactions to eKash, the country’s national digital payment system. Effective July 14, 2026, the unified platform now processes all transfers between bank accounts and mobile wallets—including account-to-wallet, wallet-to-account, account-to-account, and wallet-to-wallet transactions.
The transition follows Directive No. 45/2026 issued by the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) on January 9, 2026, and marks the culmination of years of investment in modernizing the nation’s payment infrastructure.
What eKash Means for Everyday Rwandans
For the average citizen, the change is both simple and profound. Previously, sending money across different providers often meant navigating a fragmented system—withdrawing cash from one mobile network and depositing it into another, paying multiple fees, and sometimes traveling significant distances. eKash eliminates these barriers entirely.
“Think of eKash as the highway system for your money,” explains a recent analysis of the platform. The system creates seamless connections between all financial providers, enabling instant transfers from any bank to any mobile wallet, or between any combination of connected financial institutions.
Crucially, customers do not need to register for a new service or download a new application. eKash is accessible through the same USSD codes, mobile banking apps, and internet banking platforms already in use.
Affordable, High-Limit Transactions
The new system introduces significant cost savings for consumers. All transactions processed through eKash are capped at a maximum fee of FRW 20 (approximately $0.014 USD) per transaction, charged by financial institutions.
For context, a transfer that once cost as much as FRW 2,500 or more in combined withdrawal and deposit fees can now be completed for a fraction of that price.
eKash also supports transactions of up to FRW 10 million (approximately $6,800 USD) per transaction—a substantial increase from the previous limit of FRW 2 million for bank-to-wallet transfers. (Individual financial institutions may set lower transaction or daily limits based on their own policies.)
Merchant Payments Simplified
Beyond person-to-person transfers, eKash enables customers to pay merchants using their preferred bank account or mobile wallet, regardless of which financial institution issued the merchant code. This interoperability removes a longstanding friction point for both businesses and consumers, making cashless commerce more accessible across the economy.
A Foundation for Financial Inclusion
Rwanda has identified interoperable payment systems as a key enabler of a more integrated digital economy. The eKash platform is expected to advance financial inclusion by making digital financial services more accessible across providers, while contributing to a stronger, more connected, and more resilient national payments ecosystem.
The system was built in partnership with AfricaNenda Foundation and leverages open-source digital payment infrastructure to drive large-scale inclusion, particularly for underserved and excluded communities.
Security and Continuity
Customer funds remain fully protected under Rwanda’s regulated financial system. eKash is operated by RSwitch, the country’s national electronic payments switch, which holds international security certifications and uses multi-layered authentication and encryption.
“RSwitch, as the eKash system operator, remains committed to delivering a secure, seamless, reliable and interoperable national payment infrastructure that enables every Rwandan to send, receive and pay with confidence across financial institutions,” the company stated.
Rwanda as a Continental Model
With full nationwide integration now complete, Rwanda is positioning itself as a continental model for digital public infrastructure, financial inclusion, and real-time payments. The eKash rollout represents a significant milestone in the country’s long-term digital transformation strategy, replacing previously fragmented payment systems with a unified national infrastructure.
