WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rwandans living across the United States and Canada are preparing to gather in the Washington metropolitan area for the fifth edition of the Rwanda Diaspora Sports Tournament, an initiative designed to strengthen community ties through athletics, social interaction and cultural connection.

According to information released by the Rwanda Diaspora Sports Clubs, the main tournament competitions are scheduled for Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 18031 Central Park Circle in Boyds, Maryland. Organizers expect teams and individual participants from communities across the United States and Canada to take part in a range of sporting and recreational activities.

The tournament is expected to feature soccer, basketball, volleyball, golf, table tennis, billiards, Igisoro and other traditional games. The broader gathering is also intended to provide opportunities for families, young people and community members to interact beyond competition, reinforcing the organizers’ themes of unity, networking and wellness.

Organizers describe the initiative as more than a sporting competition. In their public announcement, Rwanda Diaspora Sports Clubs said the gathering is intended to bring diaspora athletes together, encourage young people to participate in sports and create stronger professional and social networks among Rwandans living abroad. The organization also identifies community well-being and efforts to address social isolation and depression as part of the tournament’s wider objectives.

The fifth edition comes amid continuing efforts by Rwandan communities in North America to maintain meaningful connections with Rwanda while building stronger relationships within their countries of residence. Washington has become an important gathering point for such activities. Rwanda’s Embassy in the United States has previously highlighted the role of diaspora events in connecting younger generations with the country’s culture and national development. During Rwanda Day in Washington in 2024, approximately 6,000 Rwandans and friends of Rwanda gathered in the region.

At that gathering, Ambassador Mathilde Mukantabana praised the participation of Rwandans in North America, while community leaders emphasized the importance of transmitting Rwanda’s values and national heritage to younger generations. Yehoyada Mbangukira, representing Rwandan communities in the United States at the time, said the community wanted to ensure that younger Rwandans could carry forward the country’s legacy and contribute to its future.

That emphasis on community participation is reflected in the upcoming sports tournament. By bringing together athletes, families and young people, organizers hope sport can provide a practical platform for friendship, healthy competition and sustained connections among Rwandans living thousands of miles from their country of origin.

The event also reflects Rwanda’s broader diaspora engagement in the United States, where community organizations regularly cooperate around cultural, sporting and national-development initiatives. The Embassy has continued participating in diaspora sporting activities in the Washington area, including a golf tournament held in July 2026.

For Rwanda Diaspora Sports Clubs, the fifth edition carries a simple community-centered message: “Unity, Sport, Networking, Wellness.” As athletes prepare for competition in Maryland, the gathering is expected to offer something beyond medals and results—a space where Rwandans and friends can meet, build relationships and strengthen their connection to a shared culture and an increasingly active diaspora community.
