Kigali – The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) hosted a delegation of 23 students from India’s National Defence College at RDF Headquarters in Kigali on June 2, 2026, as part of an academic and strategic study tour taking place in Rwanda from June 1 to June 6.
During the visit, the delegation received an extensive briefing on the RDF’s transformation over the years and its contribution to regional peace and security. The presentation highlighted the force’s institutional growth, professionalization efforts, and its role in peace support operations across Africa, as well as initiatives aimed at strengthening regional stability and cooperation.
Representing the Minister of Defence and the RDF Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier General Patrick Karuretwa, Director General of International Military Cooperation at the Ministry of Defence, welcomed the delegation and emphasized the growing partnership between Rwanda and India, particularly in the field of defence cooperation. He noted that both countries share a commitment to promoting peace, security, and sustainable development.
Brig. Gen. Karuretwa also praised India as an important partner in military education and training, pointing out that several RDF officers have benefited from professional military courses and leadership development programs offered by Indian defence institutions. He said such exchanges continue to strengthen the capabilities of both forces while fostering closer bilateral relations.
Speaking on behalf of the visiting delegation, Brigadier General Imtiyaz Ahmed Khan expressed gratitude to the RDF for its warm reception and the informative engagements during the visit. He commended the RDF’s transformation journey and appreciated the insights shared on international military cooperation, peacekeeping operations, and efforts to enhance operational effectiveness. He noted that the exchange reflected the strong relationship, professionalism, and mutual respect that characterize cooperation between the defence institutions of Rwanda and India.
As part of their study tour, the delegation also visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where they paid tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The group further toured the Campaign Against Genocide Museum, gaining a deeper understanding of Rwanda’s history, resilience, and the country’s journey toward national unity and reconstruction.
The visit underscored the importance of international military exchanges in promoting learning, cooperation, and stronger partnerships between nations. It also highlighted the growing ties between Rwanda and India as both countries continue to expand collaboration in defence, education, and regional security initiatives.
