KARONGI, RWANDA — More than 1,000 citizens from across the country have converged at the Bisesero Genocide Memorial in Karongi District to participate in the ongoing #Kwibuka32 commemorations, honoring the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The diverse delegation of attendees comprises everyday working Rwandans, including rice and tea farmers, as well as individuals employed in the country’s mining sector. Traveling from various corners of the nation, the group came united by a shared desire to confront history firsthand.
Participants explained that they specifically chose to visit Bisesero because of its unique and profound historical significance during the genocide—a story of immense tragedy and fierce resistance that they had frequently heard about in the news. Often referred to as the “Hills of Resistance,” Bisesero is renowned as the place where thousands of Tutsis bravely mounted a defense against heavily armed Interahamwe militias before ultimately being massacred.
By visiting the memorial, the citizens expressed a deep need to witness and internalize this history for themselves. The attendees noted that reflecting on the realities of Bisesero provides crucial life lessons regarding resilience and unity. Armed with this firsthand understanding of the nation’s darkest chapter, the group stated they are now more empowered and motivated to continue playing an active role in the ongoing healing, development, and rebuilding of Rwanda.
