TRIPOLI — The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has lifted airspace restrictions imposed on Libya in 2015 during the country’s civil war, Libya’s Ministry of Transport announced Monday.
The ministry said the decision, issued on October 23, reflects significant progress and growing international confidence in Libya’s civil aviation sector.
Libya descended into chaos after the 2011 overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi in a NATO-backed uprising. A civil war erupted in 2014, dividing the country between rival administrations and severely damaging aviation infrastructure, including up to 20 aircraft at Tripoli International Airport.
Since then, international flights have remained limited to a handful of destinations, including Tunisia, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Sudan.
The ministry added that the ICAO decision would be circulated to all 193 member states for implementation.
