WASHINGTON — A suspected gunman who opened fire near a White House security checkpoint was killed following an exchange of gunfire with U.S. Secret Service officers on Saturday evening, according to federal authorities. A bystander was also wounded during the incident, while no Secret Service agents were injured.
The shooting occurred near the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, just outside the White House complex. Officials said the suspect approached the checkpoint, pulled a firearm from a bag, and began firing toward officers stationed in the area. Secret Service personnel immediately returned fire, striking the suspect.
The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, authorities confirmed. The identity of the suspect has not been officially released by federal agencies, though several reports indicated the individual had previous encounters with law enforcement and a history of mental health concerns.
A bystander caught in the crossfire was also injured and taken to a hospital for treatment. Officials said it remains unclear whether the individual was struck by the suspect’s gunfire or during the exchange between the suspect and officers.
The White House was briefly placed on lockdown as heavily armed law enforcement officers secured the area and launched an investigation. President Donald Trump was reportedly inside the White House at the time of the incident but was not harmed.
Witnesses near the White House described hearing multiple gunshots before Secret Service agents rushed reporters and staff members into secure areas. Video shared by journalists on social media showed scenes of panic as people sought cover during the unfolding incident.
The FBI and Metropolitan Police Department responded to assist with the investigation, which remains ongoing. Authorities have not yet announced a possible motive for the shooting.
