England secured a narrow 2–1 victory over DR Congo in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, coming from behind to book a place in the quarterfinals after a competitive match at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in the United States.
DR Congo made a dream start to the game, taking the lead in the 7th minute when Brian Kibambe Cipenga finished off a well-delivered pass from Chancel Mbemba. The early goal stunned England and gave the Congolese side confidence as they pushed forward in search of a second goal.
England gradually settled into the match and began to dominate possession after the 20th minute. Jude Bellingham came close to equalizing in the 29th minute with a header, but DR Congo goalkeeper Nzau Mpasi produced a fine save to keep his side ahead.
The Three Lions continued to press, with Marcus Rashford testing the defense, though his effort was blocked. DR Congo also came close to doubling their lead before halftime when Yoane Wissa struck the post, while England created late first-half chances through Harry Kane.
In the second half, England increased their attacking intensity, introducing Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon to add more pace and creativity.
The equalizer arrived in the 74th minute when Harry Kane headed home a cross from Gordon. Twelve minutes later, Kane struck again from another Gordon assist to complete his brace and turn the game around, taking his tournament tally to 12 goals.
England held on in the closing stages to secure a 2–1 win and eliminate DR Congo from the competition. The victory sends England into the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup, where they will face Mexico.
