The African Union (AU) has strongly condemned the recent drone attack targeting vessels at Egypt’s Port of Damietta, describing the incident as a serious threat to the sovereignty of an African Union member state and a matter of concern for regional security. In a statement issued from Addis Ababa on July 31, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expressed the continental body’s solidarity with the Government and people of Egypt following the attack, which occurred on July 29. According to the AU, the prompt actions taken by Egyptian authorities prevented any loss of life, while investigations continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The African Union emphasized that attacks directed at critical civilian infrastructure have implications beyond national borders, warning that Africa should not become an arena for conflicts originating outside the continent. The Commission stressed that respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity remains a fundamental principle for ensuring peace and stability across Africa, while also highlighting the importance of protecting ports and maritime facilities that are essential to trade, economic development, and regional connectivity.
Calling for restraint by all parties, the African Union urged efforts to reduce tensions and avoid actions that could further destabilize the region. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to international law, the safety of maritime navigation, and the protection of civilian infrastructure, noting that preserving secure shipping routes is vital for economic resilience and international commerce.
In the official statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said, “The African Union stands in full solidarity with the Government and people of Egypt and calls for maximum restraint and de-escalation while reaffirming our commitment to international law, maritime security, and the protection of civilian infrastructure.” Egyptian authorities also reaffirmed their determination to investigate the incident thoroughly and safeguard the country’s strategic facilities. An official government representative stated, “Egypt remains committed to protecting its national infrastructure, ensuring the safety of its citizens, and cooperating with partners to preserve regional peace and maritime security.”
The AU’s response reflects its broader commitment to preventing the spillover of external conflicts into Africa while encouraging peaceful dialogue, accountability, and cooperation among regional and international partners to strengthen stability across the continent.
