Tanzania’s President, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, arrived in Rwanda on Tuesday to participate in a high-level conference focused on the use of nuclear energy in Africa.
Upon her arrival at Kigali International Airport, President Samia was received by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MINAFFET), Dr. Usta Kayitesi.
President Samia joins other Heads of State and Government, senior officials, scientists, and energy experts who have gathered at the Kigali Convention Centre for the Africa Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit, also known as NEISA.
The summit, which runs from May 19 to May 21, 2026, is being hosted in Rwanda for the second time. It brings together stakeholders to discuss the role of advanced nuclear technology in boosting electricity generation and supporting sustainable development across the continent.
NEISA 2026 is expected to focus on how modern nuclear innovation can be safely and effectively used to increase energy production in Africa, while addressing growing electricity demands driven by population growth and industrial development.
Rwanda has been actively developing its nuclear energy ambitions for nearly nine years. The country has set an ambitious target of establishing a nuclear power plant by 2030, alongside building the necessary technical expertise and training a skilled workforce to support the sector.
In addition, Rwanda aims to generate approximately 1.5 gigawatts of electricity from nuclear energy by 2050, as part of its long-term national energy strategy.
President Samia’s visit comes shortly after Rwandan President Paul Kagame’s official trip to Tanzania earlier this month. The visit strengthened bilateral cooperation between the two countries, with both leaders agreeing to deepen collaboration across various sectors, including trade, infrastructure, and regional development.
