A 51-year-old man from Bletchley remains in police custody following his arrest on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after a massive blaze destroyed Pink Punters, a popular LGBT+ nightclub in Buckinghamshire.
Emergency services were dispatched to the venue just after 2:00 AM on Sunday. Firefighters battled the extensive fire into Monday, using cherry pickers to hose down the wreckage. While the club’s facade is still standing, the roof was completely consumed, exposing a charred interior.
Despite the severe damage, swift action by the venue’s staff ensured that no one was injured. Clubgoer Lester Jay, who was in the venue’s packed cellar when the fire broke out, praised the security team’s highly professional response.
“You could immediately feel and see from security that it wasn’t a drill, and that it was a real-life scenario,” Jay recalled. He described the terrifying scene outside as “raining fire” due to falling embers, noting how quickly the roof ignited “like a matchstick.”
Jay highlighted the staff’s dedication, noting they had to drag out intoxicated patrons who were trying to go back inside to retrieve their coats. “I couldn’t help but feel like [a stampede] potentially could have happened in there if the staff weren’t trained as well as they were, to evacuate people swiftly and safely,” he said.
The successful evacuation brought immense relief to the local community. A regular patron named Janet visited the site on Monday and expressed her gratitude that safety protocols were followed, drawing a stark contrast to a tragic bar fire in Switzerland earlier in the year that claimed 41 lives.
In the wake of the destruction, Pink Punters owner Frank McMahon released a statement emphasizing that the safety of the patrons was the only thing that mattered.
“Worldwide, nightclub fires have too often resulted in a devastating human toll. Tonight, we can all be profoundly thankful that this was not the case here,” McMahon stated. “The building may be gone, but the family, the memories, the spirit and the love remain. And let me say this clearly: Pink Punters will be back.”
The promise to rebuild has already generated a wave of support from the local LGBT+ community, with patrons like Jay eager to return and support the venue’s next chapter.
