Kyiv, Ukraine Ukrainian forces have reportedly struck one of Russia’s “most important military factories,” targeting the Kremniy El plant in the Bryansk region near the Ukrainian border. President Volodymyr Zelensky described the facility as a key producer of electronics and components for missiles used against Ukrainian cities, villages, and civilians.
“The plant produced electronics and components for Russian missiles the very missiles that strike our cities, our villages, and civilians,” Zelensky said in a statement.
According to Ukrainian military reports, the strike employed British Storm Shadow missiles, highlighting the continued role of Western-supplied weaponry in Ukraine’s defense.
Civilian Casualties Reported
Russian local authorities reported that at least six civilians were killed and 42 others injured in what they described as a “terrorist missile attack.” President Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, claimed it was “obvious that the launch of these missiles was impossible without British specialists.” Peskov further justified Russia’s ongoing military operations, stating that the strike exemplified the need for the so called “special military operation,” the Russian government’s term for its full-scale invasion of Ukraine that began on 24 February 2022.
Peskov emphasized that one of Russia’s stated objectives is the “demilitarization of Ukraine,” a justification cited repeatedly by the Kremlin throughout the conflict.
Continued Fighting Across Ukraine
Despite recent stalemates on the battlefield, attacks continue across Ukraine. On Wednesday, a Shahed drone, reportedly supplied by Iran to Russia, killed two people and injured five in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. The day before, another Russian attack in Slovyansk killed four and injured 16.
Both sides continue military operations, with Russia making slow advances in certain areas while Ukraine claims to be reclaiming territories previously occupied by Russian forces.
Diplomatic Efforts and Talks
President Zelensky also noted that a new round of talks may take place next week, involving Russian and American negotiators. The discussions are reportedly being facilitated by former US President Donald Trump, who has been actively involved in attempts to mediate an end to the war.
Proposals under consideration reportedly include Ukraine ceding control of areas in the Donbas region that it does not currently administer. Donbas, composed of Donetsk and Luhansk administrative regions, is heavily industrialized and strategically significant. Zelensky has made it clear that Ukraine cannot agree to relinquish areas currently occupied by Russian forces, which control more than 80% of the region.
International Support
The ongoing conflict has led to Ukraine receiving significant Western support, including advanced weaponry designed to defend its territory. Meanwhile, Russia continues to receive assistance from allied nations, including Shahed drones from Iran and military personnel reportedly sent by North Korea.
Context
The strike on Kremniy El underscores the intensifying military escalation along the border and the continuing high stakes for both sides. Civilian casualties, along with the destruction of critical military infrastructure, highlight the human and strategic toll of the war.
Analysts warn that unless diplomatic negotiations make headway, such strikes and counterattacks could continue to escalate, prolonging the conflict and increasing civilian suffering.
