GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo — Former Congolese president Joseph Kabila Kabange has been named leader of the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), according to a statement from insiders that participated in the meeting. The statement describes the FRN as a new stronger political and military movement established in Goma on Monday to succeed the Congo River Alliance (AFC).

“A new political and military movement … has been established in Goma,” the statement reads, translated from French. The announcement places Kabila at the head of a structure bringing together senior figures from the AFC/M23 leadership.

Political Leadership and Military Command

According to the statement, Kabila will be assisted by three vice-presidents: Corneille Nangaa, Bertrand Bisimwa and Major General Sultani Makenga. Makenga will also retain his position as chief of the general staff of the Congolese Revolutionary Army (ARC).

The leadership arrangement described in the announcement combines a new political presidency with continuity in military command. Kabila would lead the front, supported by three figures holding prominent responsibilities within its constituent leadership.

Former DRC President Joseph Kabila Kabange has been announced as the head of the newly formed Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN).

Although the statement identifies the FRN as the AFC’s successor, it does not explain how that transition will be implemented. It provides no detailed account of the movement’s charter, decision-making procedures or transfer of existing responsibilities.

Institutional Details Await Clarification

Other reports accompanying the announcement contain differing descriptions of the leadership structure. Additional administrative appointments and the precise distribution of responsibilities require clarification through an authenticated communiqué.

Further statements from the named leaders would help establish the FRN’s political programme, institutional framework and approach to negotiations concerning eastern Congo.

For communities affected by the war and divisions; the practical significance of the reorganisation will depend on subsequent decisions concerning civilian protection, security all citizens and prospects for a negotiated settlement.
