The Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Major General Junhui Wu, visited Rwandan peacekeepers serving under RWANBATT-3 in Durupi to assess their operational activities and engage with personnel deployed on the peacekeeping mission. He was accompanied by the UNMISS Sector South Commander, Brigadier General Shishir Bharadwaj, together with members of the mission’s headquarters staff. The visit formed part of ongoing efforts by the United Nations to strengthen coordination with peacekeeping contingents and evaluate the implementation of mission responsibilities in South Sudan.
During the visit, the delegation was welcomed by the RWANBATT-3 Contingent Commander, Colonel Innocent Rwaka Muhirwe, who provided a briefing on the battalion’s current operations, mission performance, and the challenges encountered while carrying out its peacekeeping responsibilities. The discussions focused on operational readiness, the effectiveness of ongoing activities, and measures aimed at enhancing the mission’s contribution to maintaining stability and protecting civilians in the area of responsibility.
According to the Rwanda Ministry of Defence, the visit underscored the importance of close cooperation between UNMISS leadership and troop-contributing countries in promoting effective peacekeeping operations. In its official communication, the Ministry noted that the engagement highlighted Rwanda’s continued commitment to supporting international peace and security through its participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions.
A statement from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan emphasized that effective collaboration between mission leadership and peacekeeping contingents is essential to fulfilling the mandate of protecting civilians and supporting long-term peace efforts. “The professionalism and dedication of peacekeepers remain critical to the success of the mission and to the communities they serve,” the mission noted.
Speaking during the briefing, Colonel Innocent Rwaka Muhirwe reaffirmed the battalion’s commitment to carrying out its duties with discipline and professionalism. “Our personnel remain committed to executing the UN mandate while working closely with local communities and mission partners to promote peace, security, and stability,” he said.
Local residents in the area also welcomed the continued presence of UN peacekeepers. One community representative expressed hope that sustained cooperation between UNMISS leadership and deployed forces would strengthen security and contribute to lasting peace for civilians living in South Sudan.
