MOSCOW — In a striking display of geopolitical defiance, Russia has officially refused to back a United States-led initiative to exclude South Africa from the upcoming G20 meetings. The diplomatic clash underscores deepening divisions within the international forum, as Moscow firmly aligns itself with its BRICS ally and pushes back against Washington’s influence.
Speaking to the news agency Sputnik, Russia’s G20 Sherpa, Denis Agafonov, confirmed that Moscow is actively and directly communicating its unwavering opposition to US officials.
“The American side’s decision cannot be accepted or supported by us in any way. We consider it illegitimate,” Agafonov stated, delivering a sharp rebuke of Washington’s maneuvering.
The move to sideline Pretoria has triggered immediate backlash from Moscow, which views the exclusion as an overreach of Western influence within a coalition designed for broad global economic cooperation. Agafonov emphasized the strategic and historic ties between Russia and South Africa, framing the African nation’s participation as essential to the G20’s overall balance and legitimacy.
“South Africa is a friendly country to us and a BRICS member,” Agafonov continued, highlighting the powerful economic bloc that both nations champion. “It will return and continue its rightful work within the G20 mechanisms.”
The standoff comes as the clock ticks down to the highly anticipated G20 meetings scheduled for mid-December. Russian diplomats have expressed hope that the controversial decision will eventually be reviewed and overturned before the summit convenes, warning that isolating key developing nations could fracture the structural integrity of the G20.
As the mid-December summit approaches, the international community is watching closely to see whether the United States will review its stance under pressure from the BRICS bloc, or if this exclusion will set the stage for a highly polarized showdown at the G20 table.
