Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced fresh battlefield gains on Sunday, claiming that Ukrainian troops have advanced more than 3 kilometers in the southern Zaporizhzhia region, a key front in the ongoing counteroffensive against Russian forces. The announcement comes amid escalating clashes and conflicting reports from both sides of the 3.5-year-old war.
In his nightly video address, Zelenskiy highlighted progress near the town of Dobropillia in Donetsk and around Orikhiv in Zaporizhzhia, stating:
“At this time, Ukrainian units are continuing our counteroffensive actions near Dobropillia, but also in other sectors — particularly in Zaporizhzhia region near Orikhiv. There, our forces have advanced — today more than 3km.”
Strategic Gains and Local Control
Ukraine’s 24th Separate Assault Battalion reported via Telegram that it, along with another unit, had taken control of Mali Shcherbaky, a village strategically located between Orikhiv and the Dnipro River. The move could signal a tightening grip on supply routes and a push toward deeper Russian-held territory.
The Russian Defence Ministry did not acknowledge the Ukrainian advance or the status of Mali Shcherbaky, instead claiming successful strikes on Ukrainian positions in nearby Novoandriivka.
Civilian Casualties and Regional Impact
The governor of Zaporizhzhia confirmed that Russian shelling near Orikhiv killed one civilian and wounded three others. Meanwhile, in the neighboring Dnipropetrovsk region, two people were reported dead following a Russian attack near the city of Dnipro.
Conflicting Narratives and War of Words
As battlefield reports remain unverified by independent sources, both Ukraine and Russia continue to present divergent accounts of the front line. Ukraine’s top commander estimates the active combat zone stretches over 1,250 kilometers.
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently claimed that Moscow’s forces had seized 5,000 square kilometers of territory this year and maintained strategic dominance. Zelenskiy countered the assertion, stating that Ukrainian troops were inflicting “heavy losses” on Russian forces near Dobropillia and “defending ourselves along all other directions.”
️ Outlook
The latest developments underscore the fluid and contested nature of the conflict, with both sides vying for control in key regions. As Ukraine pushes forward in its counteroffensive, the humanitarian toll continues to mount, and the geopolitical stakes remain high.
