A U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle was reportedly shot down over Iran on April 3, marking a major escalation in the ongoing military confrontation involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. According to multiple U.S. media reports citing American officials, one of the two crew members has now been rescued, while search-and-rescue operations remain underway for the second missing airman.
The aircraft is believed to have gone down during overnight operations, and Iranian state-linked outlets quickly circulated images they claimed showed the wreckage. Several outlets have since reported that the aircraft involved was likely an F-15E, a two-seat strike fighter used for deep-strike and combat missions. If confirmed, this would represent the first known U.S. manned aircraft lost to hostile fire inside Iran since the current phase of the conflict began in late February.
Early reports indicated that both crew members ejected after the aircraft was hit. Since then, U.S. officials cited by Reuters, Military Times, CNN-affiliated reporting, and other outlets have confirmed that one crew member was successfully recovered by American forces and is alive, though official details about that person’s condition have remained limited. The second crew member has not yet been publicly accounted for, and the search remains active under dangerous combat conditions.

As of now, the Pentagon, U.S. Central Command, and the White House have not released a full public operational account of the incident. That has left many details — including the exact location of the shootdown, the weapon system used, and the status of the missing crew member — still unconfirmed. Iranian outlets initially issued varying claims about the aircraft type and the fate of the crew, but some of those reports remain unverified.
The downing of the jet is likely to intensify concerns about the widening risk to U.S. personnel in the region. Military analysts have long warned that operations deep inside Iranian territory carry serious exposure to integrated air defense systems, rapid retaliation, and highly contested rescue conditions. The successful recovery of one crew member underscores the urgency and complexity of combat search-and-rescue missions now unfolding in the theater.
This remains a developing story, and additional official updates are expected as rescue efforts continue.
