Washington DC – The U.S. and Ukrainian representatives are scheduled to meet in Miami on Sunday morning ahead of planned discussions in Moscow between President Trump’s envoys and Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to officials from both nations.
Why it’s important: Washington and Kyiv are attempting to finalize their shared positions on the updated U.S. peace proposal—an outline that has undergone significant revisions in recent days to better align with Ukraine’s concerns. Trump’s negotiators, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are expected to present the refined plan to Putin on Tuesday.
Last week, Trump stated he would only sit down with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Putin once the sides had made substantial progress toward a potential war-ending agreement.
“Our talks rooted in the Geneva principles will continue. Diplomacy is ongoing. The U.S. side is showing a forward-leaning, pragmatic posture, and in the next few days, it should be possible to clarify what steps could bring this conflict to a respectful and just conclusion. Our delegation has firm instructions, and I expect them to act with Ukraine’s core interests in mind,” Zelensky said on Saturday.
Point of tension: American officials believe that arriving in Moscow with a unified U.S.–Ukraine framework could help advance conversations with Putin.
However, as Ukraine has successfully negotiated changes to the original 28-point U.S. proposal, the Kremlin has suggested it may not be open to accepting those revisions.
On Thursday, Putin reiterated his territorial demands, declaring that Russia intends to obtain all the areas it claims—either through negotiations or by military means. He added that Kyiv appears willing to fight “until the last Ukrainian,” and said Russia is prepared to do the same.
