Her Excellency Madame Jeannette Kagame, the First Lady of Rwanda, has been honored with the FIGO Distinguished Recognition Award, a prestigious international prize celebrating individuals outside the obstetrics and gynecology profession who have made exceptional contributions to women’s health.
The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) presented the award in recognition of the First Lady’s pioneering advocacy and transformative impact on the health and well-being of women and girls in Rwanda and across Africa.
Madame Kagame, a founding member of the Organisation of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA), has been a relentless force in public health for over two decades. Her leadership has been instrumental in addressing some of the most critical health challenges facing women. Notably, she spearheaded groundbreaking nationwide HPV vaccination campaigns, a landmark initiative that has successfully protected a generation of young Rwandan women against cervical cancer.
“First Lady Jeannette Kagame’s work exemplifies visionary leadership in public health,” a FIGO spokesperson stated. “Her dedication has not only yielded measurable results in disease prevention but has also empowered women to take charge of their health and future. The success of Rwanda’s HPV vaccination program is a global benchmark.”
Holding a degree in Business and Management Science, the First Lady has effectively leveraged her platform to champion a wide range of crucial issues. Her advocacy extends from HIV prevention and cervical and breast cancer awareness to broader themes of women’s empowerment and leadership. As a compelling keynote speaker at numerous international forums, she has consistently highlighted the vital link between women’s health and the sustainable development of nations.
The FIGO award acknowledges this holistic approach, celebrating a leader whose efforts have created a lasting legacy of improved health outcomes and greater opportunities for women from adolescence through adulthood.
