Malakal, South Sudan – March 26, 2025 – Rwandan peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) were awarded prestigious UN service medals in recognition of their exceptional contributions to peace and security in the volatile Upper Nile State.
A Ceremony of Honor and Gratitude
The medal ceremony, held at the RWANBATT-2 Headquarters in Malakal, celebrated the contingent’s nine months of dedicated service, marked by bravery, discipline, and unwavering commitment to protecting civilians.
UNMISS Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Mohan Subramanian, praised Rwanda’s vital role in global peacekeeping, stating: “The Rwandan peacekeepers have demonstrated extraordinary courage, particularly during high-risk rescue missions.” He specifically highlighted their heroic efforts in saving UN staff from attacks by the White Army rebels in Nassir County.
Securing Stability in South Sudan
Brig. Gen. Louis Kanobayire, Rwanda’s Senior National Representative in South Sudan, detailed RWANBATT-2’s critical operations, including:
✔ Joint patrols with local security forces
✔ Human rights monitoring and intelligence gathering
✔ Securing the Malakal Protection of Civilians (POC) site and Bunj Company Operating Base
“Their efforts have been instrumental in maintaining stability and safeguarding vulnerable communities,” he said.
A Milestone for Rwandan Peacekeepers
Lt. Col. Charles Rutagisha, RWANBATT-2 Contingent Commander, described the medals as a symbol of pride and motivation for his troops. “This recognition reinforces our resolve to serve with excellence,” he said, thanking UNMISS leadership, the South Sudanese government, and allied forces for their support.
