October 20, 2025, the Government of Rwanda, through the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC), officially launched its annual anti-malaria mosquito spraying campaign in Gakomeye village, Muyumbu Sector, Rwamagana District. This activity is led by RBC’s Malaria and Other Parasitic Diseases Division and targets high-risk areas known for high mosquito activity and malaria transmission.
The USA New Times team arrived on-site and witnessed a well-organized operation, with spraying teams wearing protective gear and using professional equipment. Local residents expressed satisfaction with the government’s efforts. One community member shared:
“We thank the President of the Republic for continuing to protect us. This spraying shows the government is close to the people and cares for our health.”
Part of a Larger National Strategy
This campaign is part of Rwanda’s broader national strategy to eliminate malaria. The government has adopted a multi-sectoral approach that includes:
– Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) done regularly in high-burden areas
– Mass distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs)
– Community sensitization on malaria prevention
– Rapid testing and treatment at the community level
Every year, RBC develops a malaria action plan in coordination with district hospitals, health centers, and local leaders to ensure that targeted zones are reached efficiently.
The use of data and mapping tools has allowed the government to prioritize areas with the highest risk and monitor progress.

Rwanda’s Commitment to Elimination
The Rwandan government has committed to eliminating malaria by 2030, in line with global and regional goals. The country has already seen significant reductions in malaria cases and deaths due to its aggressive and coordinated prevention strategies.
Conclusion:
As malaria remains a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, Rwanda continues to set an example in the fight against it. The annual mosquito spraying campaign is just one of many actions showing the government’s dedication to ensuring a healthier future for its people.
