The USA New Times visited the Mubuga Sector in Karongi District to observe Rwanda’s ongoing efforts to expand underground internet connectivity to underserved communities. Spearheaded by the Government of Rwanda, this ambitious initiative is revolutionizing rural life by delivering fast, affordable, and reliable internet access directly to citizens.
During our visit, we spoke with several residents of Mubuga who shared their excitement and optimism about the project’s impact. One local, Philippe Ntahobatuye—who resides in Karongi and works in Mubuga—expressed his joy, noting that his child will now be able to study online, access educational resources, and explore knowledge through platforms like YouTube and TikTok. He emphasized that the internet service is not only high-speed but also budget-friendly, allowing him to stay connected with friends and family while keeping up with national and global news.
Philippe also highlighted the initiative’s transformative effect on education, as students and teachers gain access to digital learning tools and platforms. He expressed deep gratitude to the Government of Rwanda, commending President Paul Kagame for championing impactful projects that are rapidly modernizing the country and enhancing the quality of life for everyday citizens.
This underground internet rollout is part of Rwanda’s broader digital transformation strategy, which aims to bridge the digital divide and promote socio-economic development. By investing in cutting-edge infrastructure, Rwanda is positioning itself as a continental leader in digital innovation. Projects like this not only support education and communication but also unlock new opportunities for entrepreneurship, e-commerce, and digital services in rural areas.
Residents of Mubuga Sector view the initiative as a beacon of hope and progress. They believe that high-speed internet will open doors to new possibilities, connect them to the global community, and accelerate Rwanda’s journey toward a knowledge-based economy.
