Madrid, Spain — Real Madrid are closing in on a blockbuster deal to sign Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold when his contract expires this summer, according to multiple reports.
The England international, 26, is in the final months of his deal at Anfield and can now negotiate a free transfer abroad. Sources close to the negotiations told BBC Sport that while no agreement has been finalized, discussions are in the “closing stages.”
Alexander-Arnold, a product of Liverpool’s academy, has spent his entire career with the Reds, making over 300 appearances and winning every major trophy, including the Premier League and Champions League. He was named vice-captain last summer but has yet to commit to a new deal, fueling speculation over his future.
A Dream Move to Madrid?
Real Madrid have reportedly tracked Alexander-Arnold for nearly two years, viewing him as a priority signing. His attacking prowess and elite passing range make him an ideal fit for manager Carlo Ancelotti’s system.
However, his potential departure has caused tension among Liverpool supporters. Some fans grew frustrated after Alexander-Arnold admitted in an interview that winning the Ballon d’Or was a bigger personal ambition than another Champions League with Liverpool. His muted response to transfer rumors and a controversial celebration against West Ham further fueled doubts.
Fan Backlash and Legacy Concerns
If he leaves, Alexander-Arnold would follow in the footsteps of Steve McManaman, who joined Real Madrid on a free transfer in 1999. McManaman told BBC Sport that while the move would be a “fantastic opportunity,” losing a homegrown star would sting more for fans.
“If Van Dijk or Salah leave, it’s Liverpool’s fault. If Trent leaves, it’s Trent’s fault,” McManaman said. “He’d be a superstar in Madrid—but it would leave a considerable hole at Liverpool.”
Who Replaces Him?
Youngster Conor Bradley has impressed in Alexander-Arnold’s absence, but McManaman cautioned that replicating his attacking output would be tough. “Trent’s numbers are fantastic… Bradley is a different player, but fans will hope he can grow into that role.”
With Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah also entering the final months of their contracts, Liverpool face a pivotal summer. But Alexander-Arnold’s potential exit—especially on a free transfer—could be the most emotional departure of all.
