HUNTINGDON, England – A routine train journey turned into a scene of terror on Saturday evening as a mass stabbing incident aboard a London-bound service left at least ten people injured, nine of them with life-threatening wounds, according to British police.
The attack, which British Prime Minister Keir Starmer labelled “appalling,” has prompted a major investigation involving the British Transport Police (BTP) and Counter Terror Policing units. Two suspects are in custody following the violence that erupted on a train in Cambridgeshire, East England.
What We Know So Far
The Incident and Response
The violence unfolded around 6:25 p.m. local time as the train travelled towards the capital. The situation came to a head when the train made its scheduled stop at Huntingdon station, approximately 75 miles (120 kilometers) north of London.
Armed police and a significant contingent of emergency services rushed to the station after receiving calls at 7:39 p.m. The swift response led to the arrest of two individuals at the scene.
The Victims
In a statement on the social media platform X, the BTP confirmed that ten people were transported to local hospitals for treatment. In a sobering update, the force stated that nine of those victims are believed to have sustained “life-threatening injuries.”
Official Statements and Investigation
Authorities are treating the incident with extreme gravity but have cautioned against early speculation. BTP Chief Superintendent Chris Casey addressed the media, stating, “We’re conducting urgent enquiries to establish what has happened, and it could take some time before we are in a position to confirm anything further.”
He emphasized the preliminary nature of the investigation, adding, “At this early stage, it would not be appropriate to speculate on the causes of the incident.”
The involvement of Counter Terror Policing indicates that investigators are actively working to determine the motive behind the attack.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his concern in a post on X, calling the event “deeply concerning.” He added, “My thoughts are with all those affected, and my thanks go to the emergency services for their response.”
Travel Disruption
In the aftermath of the attack, train services on the route have been temporarily suspended. Commuters are advised to seek alternative travel arrangements as the investigation at Huntingdon station continues.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and the nation, marking a severe and violent disruption on the UK’s rail network. As the investigation proceeds, the focus remains on the condition of the injured and the precise circumstances that led to the stabbings.
