GAZA CITY (AP) — Hundreds of Palestinians protested against Hamas rule in northern Gaza on Tuesday, marking the largest public demonstration against the militant group since the war with Israel began last October.

The protest in Beit Lahia saw crowds chanting “Hamas out!” and criticizing the group’s leadership. Witnesses reported that masked Hamas security forces intervened, using batons and physical force to disperse the gathering. Several protesters were reportedly beaten.

The demonstration followed Israeli evacuation orders in northern Gaza after Palestinian militants launched rockets into Israel. Many protesters expressed frustration with Hamas’ refusal of recent ceasefire proposals and the devastating toll of the eight-month war.

“We’re tired of dying for political games,” said Mohammed Diab, a Beit Lahia resident who lost his home and brother in the conflict. “Hamas needs to listen to the people suffering under the rubble.”

Hamas officials dismissed the protest, calling it a “suspicious” attempt to divert blame from Israel. Government spokesperson Dr. Basem Naim acknowledged citizens’ right to protest but questioned why similar demonstrations weren’t occurring in the West Bank.

The war, which began after Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people, has left Gaza in ruins. Health officials report over 50,000 Palestinian deaths, widespread destruction, and a humanitarian crisis affecting the territory’s 2.1 million residents.

While open criticism of Hamas remains rare in Gaza, Tuesday’s protest suggests growing public discontent with the group’s leadership during the prolonged conflict. Analysts note that previous dissent was often suppressed through fear of retaliation.

The demonstration comes as ceasefire negotiations remain stalled, with both sides blaming each other for the impasse. International mediators continue efforts to restart talks and address Gaza’s worsening humanitarian situation.
