Tensions in the Gulf region continue to rise after an Iranian lawmaker claimed that vessels passing through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz are being charged fees of up to $2 million.
Alaeddin Boroujerdi, speaking on Iranian state television, said that some ships transiting the narrow waterway are now subject to what he described as a new financial regime imposed by Tehran.
“War Has Costs,” Lawmaker Says
Boroujerdi stated that the charges reflect Iran’s authority over the strait, emphasizing that the country is asserting its rights amid ongoing regional tensions.
“A new governing regime is being imposed in the Strait,” he said, adding that “war has costs.” He suggested that the fees demonstrate “the authority and right that the Islamic Republic of Iran possesses.”
The remarks come at a time of heightened geopolitical strain, with the Strait of Hormuz once again at the center of global concern.
Strategic Importance of the Strait
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, with a significant portion of global oil and gas shipments passing through its narrow corridor each day.
Any attempt to impose fees or restrict access could have far-reaching implications for international trade, energy markets, and global economic stability.
Claims Yet to Be Verified
Despite the seriousness of the claim, there has been no independent confirmation that such fees are being collected.
International observers, including the BBC, have reported that they have not been able to verify the existence of the alleged $2 million toll.
Growing Regional Uncertainty
The statement adds another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile situation in the Middle East, where military threats, economic pressure, and strategic positioning continue to intersect.
If confirmed, the imposition of such fees could further escalate tensions between Iran and Western powers, particularly the United States and its regional allies, many of whom rely heavily on uninterrupted access to the Strait.
For now, the international community is closely watching developments as questions remain over whether the claim reflects official policy or political messaging amid an increasingly fragile security environment.
