The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has issued a warning to EU and EEA countries as the region approaches the winter respiratory-virus season. On 20 October 2025, the agency published new guidance calling for increased vigilance and proactive measures to protect public health. Health authorities are being urged to strengthen immunisation campaigns and implement targeted infection-prevention strategies to reduce the impact of seasonal illnesses.

ECDC officials highlighted that several respiratory viruses—including influenza, RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), and COVID-19—pose particular risks to vulnerable populations. Older adults, young children, and individuals with chronic health conditions are expected to be most affected if preventive measures are not rigorously applied. The agency stressed that timely vaccination and public-health interventions could significantly reduce hospitalizations and severe disease.

According to the guidance, vaccination coverage in many European countries remains below recommended thresholds, particularly among high-risk groups. ECDC urged member states to accelerate flu vaccination campaigns and to encourage uptake of COVID-19 boosters where appropriate. The agency also recommended reinforcing hygiene measures in public spaces, schools, and healthcare settings to mitigate transmission.

In addition to vaccination, the ECDC guidance emphasizes early detection and monitoring of respiratory viruses. Countries are encouraged to expand testing, strengthen epidemiological surveillance, and rapidly share data with EU partners to track trends and emerging threats. The ECDC stressed that coordinated regional responses are crucial for preventing widespread outbreaks and easing the burden on healthcare systems.

The alert comes as Europe faces mounting pressures on hospitals due to previous waves of respiratory illnesses. Public-health authorities are taking the warning seriously, with many countries already planning accelerated campaigns and preparedness exercises. The ECDC concluded that proactive steps now could safeguard millions and help Europe navigate the winter season with fewer severe infections.
