President Paul Kagame has officially named Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva as the new Prime Minister of Rwanda, marking a key transition in the country’s top leadership.
Dr. Nsengiyumva takes over from Dr. Edouard Ngirente, who had served in the role since 2017 and was recognized for his efforts in driving economic and social advancement. This change signals President Kagame’s continued commitment to experienced, results-driven governance.
Before his appointment, Dr. Nsengiyumva was the Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Rwanda, a post he began on February 25, 2025. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in ensuring financial stability and advancing key reforms within Rwanda’s banking and monetary systems.
With a rich background in public administration, Dr. Nsengiyumva has held several high-level government roles. He served as the Permanent Secretary in both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Trade and Industry, where he contributed to the development of policies that strengthened Rwanda’s transformation into a knowledge-based economy.
Dr. Nsengiyumva holds a doctorate in Economics from the University of Leicester in the UK and is highly regarded for his scholarly depth and effective leadership.
As he takes on the role of Prime Minister, expectations are high that Dr. Nsengiyumva will continue to strengthen Rwanda’s economic growth, promote good governance, and advance national goals under Vision 2050, which aims to elevate Rwanda to high-income status.
The announcement has been welcomed by many observers, who view Dr. Nsengiyumva’s combination of technical knowledge and extensive public service experience as a strong asset for Rwanda’s future development.
