A tense confrontation erupted Saturday afternoon on Chicago’s Southwest Side after gunfire was directed at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents during an ongoing federal operation, according to officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The incident occurred in the Little Village neighborhood, a densely populated area known for its vibrant Latino community. Federal and local authorities were carrying out “Operation Midway Blitz,” a joint enforcement effort reportedly aimed at targeting organized criminal networks and immigration-related offenses.
Shots Fired and Officer Injured
Officials confirmed that someone opened fire at CBP agents as they were conducting operations in the vicinity of 26th Street and Pulaski Road.
Chicago Police officers responded quickly to support the federal team. During the exchange, one Chicago police officer sustained injuries. The officer’s condition was not immediately released, but sources indicated the injuries were not life-threatening.
Authorities did not specify whether any federal agents were struck by gunfire, though DHS described the incident as “a serious and deliberate attack on law enforcement personnel.”

According to law enforcement sources, Operation Midway Blitz involves coordinated actions between DHS, CBP, and the Chicago Police Department. The initiative focuses on combating narcotics trafficking, illegal firearm distribution, and human smuggling operations believed to be active in Chicago’s southwest corridor.
At least two individuals were detained during Saturday’s sweep, though officials did not disclose their identities or whether they were directly connected to the shooting.

The sudden burst of gunfire sent shockwaves through Little Village, with residents reporting hearing multiple shots and seeing a heavy police and federal presence. Several streets were temporarily closed as investigators collected shell casings and reviewed surveillance footage from nearby businesses.
