A delegation of African soldiers who served in Rwanda as peacekeepers during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi returned today for a seven-day visit.

The group began its programme on Wednesday with an emotional tour of the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi, where more than 250,000 victims of the genocide are laid to rest.

Speaking at the site, the veterans expressed deep sorrow over the atrocities committed in 1994 and paid tribute to the victims. They also reflected on their mission three decades ago, recalling the challenges of protecting civilians amid the violence.

“This memorial is a reminder of why we were here,” one veteran said. “Our mission was difficult, but seeing Rwanda today gives us hope that peace can prevail.”

According to officials from the Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement (MINUBUMWE), the visiting soldiers will spend the coming days engaging in activities across the country, including meetings with survivors, visits to historical sites, and discussions with Rwandan security forces on lessons learned in peacekeeping.

The visit comes as Rwanda continues to honor those who stood against the genocide and strengthen bonds with countries whose troops contributed to peace efforts during one of the darkest chapters in its history.
