Goma – The Alliance Fleuve Congo–March 23 Movement (AFC-M23) has issued a public statement expressing concern over what it describes as an increase in military activity by forces aligned with the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo during the month of May 2026. In a communiqué released from Goma on June 1, AFC-M23 said that areas including Minembwe, Masisi, Numbi, and Walikale experienced intensified ground and aerial operations, affecting both populated communities and positions held by the movement.
According to the statement, AFC-M23 claims it has observed a significant deployment of troops, heavy weaponry, and military equipment across several front-line locations, particularly in South Kivu Province. The movement said these developments raise concerns about the possibility of new military offensives in the region, which has experienced years of instability, armed conflict, and humanitarian challenges.
The group stated that it is closely monitoring the evolving security situation and warned that any future attacks targeting areas under its control would prompt what it described as a firm and proportional response.
