Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday that he believes the war in Ukraine may be approaching its conclusion, raising new speculation about the future direction of Europe’s longest and deadliest military conflict since World War II.
Speaking to reporters only hours after Russia’s Victory Day commemorations in Moscow, Putin stated that he felt “the matter is coming to an end” when discussing the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. His remarks came during a period of continued fighting on the battlefield and ongoing diplomatic tensions between Moscow and Western nations.
Earlier in the day, Putin addressed Russia’s annual Victory Day parade, an event traditionally used to showcase national pride and military strength. This year’s ceremony was viewed by many observers as more restrained than previous celebrations, with a reduced military display compared to earlier years since the start of the conflict in Ukraine.
Despite signaling confidence in Russia’s position during the parade, Putin later indicated that Moscow may also be open to broader discussions concerning European security arrangements. He said Russia would be willing to engage in negotiations aimed at creating a new security framework for Europe, suggesting that future stability on the continent would require dialogue between major powers.
Putin also identified former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as his preferred negotiating counterpart. Schröder, who maintained close ties with Russia during and after his time in office, has long faced criticism in Europe for his relationship with Moscow and his involvement in Russian energy projects.
The Russian leader’s comments come amid continued international debate over possible diplomatic paths toward ending the conflict, which has caused widespread destruction, displaced millions of people, and reshaped geopolitical relations across Europe and beyond.
While Putin’s remarks may signal a willingness to discuss future arrangements, no immediate breakthrough in peace negotiations has been announced. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly insisted that any resolution to the conflict must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Western governments continue to monitor developments closely as military operations and diplomatic efforts move forward simultaneously. The war has significantly impacted global energy markets, international security policy, and relations between Russia and NATO countries since the conflict escalated in 2022.
