Rwanda is rapidly cementing its reputation as the premier gathering place for Africa and the world. Driven by world-class infrastructure and a surge in international delegates, the country’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector generated an impressive $94.7 million (approx. Rwf 138.8 billion) in 2025.
According to the Rwanda Development Board’s (RDB) latest annual report, released on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, this reflects an 11.8% increase from the previous year. This booming subsector played a vital role in pushing Rwanda’s overall tourism revenues to a record-breaking $685 million (approx. Rwf 1 trillion).
2025 By the Numbers
The year saw a significant influx of global thought leaders, athletes, and industry professionals touching down in Kigali.
- Total MICE Revenue: $94.7 million (+11.8% year-over-year)

A Blockbuster Calendar
The 2025 events roster featured a diverse mix of sports, technology, health, and entertainment.
A major highlight of the year was hosting the UCI Road World Championships—the first time this prestigious cycling race has ever been held on the African continent—which dramatically elevated Rwanda’s global sports tourism profile.
Other marquee events that drew massive crowds included:
- Mobile World Congress (MWC) Kigali
- MOVE Afrika by Global Citizen
- The Basketball Africa League (BAL)
- Giants of Africa Festival
- Africa HealthTech Summit
- Africa Renaissance Retreat
- PMI Global Summit Series Africa
The Winning Formula
Officials attribute this accelerating success to a combination of forward-thinking policies and heavy investment in infrastructure.
Rwanda’s highly accessible visa-on-arrival system, coupled with a robust security environment and reliable transport networks, makes it an easy choice for international event organizers. The events themselves were anchored by Kigali’s internationally recognized, top-tier venues, primarily the Kigali Convention Centre (KCC), BK Arena, and the Kigali Convention and Exhibition Village (KCEV).
The Road Ahead: Chasing $224 Million by 2028
The RDB and the Rwandan government are not resting on their laurels. Projections indicate that MICE revenues will climb to $156 million in 2026 and $187 million in 2027.
The ultimate goal is to hit $224 million (approx. Rwf 325 billion) by 2028.
This ambitious target is a core component of the Second National Strategy for Transformation (NST2), which runs from 2024 to 2029. Under NST2, the government is aggressively prioritizing the attraction of major international conferences and sporting events. To ensure visitors keep coming back, the strategy also includes a heavy focus on professionalizing the hospitality workforce, enhancing service standards, and implementing new certification initiatives to boost the sector’s overall global competitiveness.
