CHANTILLY, FRANCE — President Paul Kagame has called on Africans to prioritize self-reliance while building productive partnerships with the rest of the world, warning that division and isolation will not solve the continent’s challenges.
Speaking on April 24, 2026, during the World Policy Conference in Chantilly, Kagame said Africa’s aspirations are straightforward: stronger internal responsibility combined with meaningful international cooperation.
“What Africa wants is simple: to take care of ourselves while working with others in ways that produce results,” Kagame said. “As the world becomes increasingly divided, isolation is not the solution. It will only lead to conflict and deeper divisions.”
The Rwandan leader made the remarks during a high-level gathering hosted by Thierry de Montbrial, a leading French foreign policy expert and organizer of the annual conference.
Kagame stressed that development should not be viewed as a competition where some nations advance at the expense of others. Instead, he said global progress should benefit all societies and encourage cooperation.
“The real question is not whether we can create a perfect world,” he said. “It is whether we can live together despite our differences and continue moving forward together.”
The World Policy Conference is recognized as a major forum for discussing governance, diplomacy, economics, and international security. It gathers heads of state, policymakers, business leaders, and scholars from across the globe. Among those expected to participate this year are Emmanuel Macron, Gérard Larcher, and Aleksandar Vučić.
Kagame’s message comes at a time when many countries are reassessing trade alliances, regional security, and development strategies amid growing geopolitical tensions. His call for unity and practical cooperation reflects a broader push for Africa to shape its own future while engaging confidently with global partners.
