Kigali — President Paul Kagame joined sports fans and dignitaries on Wednesday evening to witness the official opening of the CAVB Men’s Club Championship 2026, a major continental volleyball tournament hosted in Rwanda for the first time.
The championship began at the modern BK Arena, where teams from across Africa gathered for the 10-day competition. The tournament features 24 clubs representing 15 countries, with Rwanda fielding four teams.
The opening ceremony blended entertainment and national pride, with performances from local DJs and a parade of participating nations’ flags, creating an energetic atmosphere before competition began.
Officials praised Rwanda’s growing reputation as a destination for major sporting events. Sports Minister Nelly Mukazayire welcomed athletes and guests, saying the tournament reflects Rwanda’s commitment to unity, excellence, and international cooperation through sports.
Leaders from the African Volleyball Confederation also highlighted the rising standard of African volleyball, noting the continent’s growing competitiveness on the global stage.
The first match of the tournament saw Rwanda’s APR VC dominate Zimbabwe’s Black Rhinos in straight sets, winning 25-18, 25-10, and 25-11.
The strong victory gave home supporters an exciting start and raised hopes that a Rwandan club could capture the continental title on home soil.
Hosting the championship adds to Rwanda’s expanding sports portfolio, following successful international events in basketball, cycling, and football. Many observers see the tournament as another step in positioning the country as a regional center for sports development and tourism.
With President Kagame in attendance and fans filling the arena, the championship opened with both celebration and ambition as Africa’s top volleyball clubs begin their battle for continental glory.
