WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Law enforcement agencies descended upon Temple Israel on Thursday afternoon following a severe security incident that involved a vehicle crash, a structural fire, and reports of gunfire at the prominent synagogue and its adjoining early childhood learning center.
The Incident
According to local reports from Detroit’s WDIV-TV, authorities believe a truck was intentionally driven into the building, which subsequently caught fire. Aerial footage captured by the news station showed heavy smoke billowing from the facility’s roof, with adults seen jumping over fences and sprinting through a playground to access the building.
While reporters confirmed that shots were fired during the chaos, it remains unclear whether the gunfire originated from an attacker or the facility’s security personnel. At approximately 12:40 p.m., an “active shooter” text alert was issued to area residents, advising all local schools and houses of worship to immediately shelter in place.
